Planning chiefs given green light to daily office climbing plan

Plans to build an indoor climbing centre at a regional daily’s former office have been approved.

City of Wolverhampton Council has given the green light to the devleopment at the old Express & Star press hall in Queen Street, Wolverhampton.

The offices, home to the Express & Star for more than 140 years, were left empty after staff moved to the city centre’s Mander House in 2023.

Permission had already been granted for part of the building to be turned into apartments.

E&S building

The new centre would create 33 jobs, according to the application by Climbing Hut Ltd.

The firm already runs similar facilities in Shrewsbury and Ellesmere Port.

According to the BBC, the council has described the plan as a “significant investment” for the location.
