Journalist named ‘fuel poverty hero’ for campaigning reporting

A daily journalist has been recognised as a “fuel poverty hero” for his campaigning reporting on the issue.

Martin Williams, senior news reporter at Glasgow-based daily The Herald, has been recognised with the title by Energy Action Scotland.

The award comes after Martin, pictured, wrote a story about how hundreds of thousands of homes that are not fit for human habitation.

This was followed up with an article about the toddler who was “lucky to be alive” after nearly choking on vomit in a mould and damp infested council flat in Hamilton.

In recognising his work, EAS chief executive Frazer Scott said Martin had been recognised for his “relentless pursuit of fairness for everyone and energy justice”.

EAS campaigns to raise awareness of fuel poverty and lobby the Scottish Government to make positive changes.

The nominations of the awards come from the organisation’s membership, which includes organisations and companies, and individuals as well as charities, advice agencies, housing associations, local authorities, academics, energy utilities, heating and insulation manufacturers and installers.
